Hiking and Camping at Ancient Lakes Pt. 1 (or, "This is Washington?") [4K]

In this video my friend Jesse and I hike to Ancient Lakes in the Scablands of central Washington. This landscape is nothing like what folks normally think of when they think of hiking and backpacking in Washington. We're famous for our mountains, forested valleys and refreshing mountain lakes and streams. This place looks more like Utah! Part 1wraps up at the end of the day Saturday, and in Part 2 we'll head back to the car to resupply and then hike to Dusty Lake on the otherside of the ridge. Colosseum, Rome 2025 (This is the slightly longer version wide screen)

The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is one of the most iconic monuments of ancient Rome and a symbol of the Roman Empire’s grandeur. Construction of the Colosseum began around AD 70–72 under Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty and was completed in AD 80 by his son Titus. Later modifications were made during the reign of Domitian, the third Flavian emperor, completing the structure as we know it today. Built on the site of Emperor Nero’s private lake, the Colosseum was a political statement intended to return land to the Roman people and provide public entertainment. It was constructed using a combination of concrete, tuff, and travertine limestone, and could hold an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The design included tiered seating that reflected the rigid social hierarchy of Roman society, with the best seats reserved for the elite and less desirable spots for the lower classes and women. The Colosseum was used primarily for gladiatorial contests, animal hunts (venationes), executions, and mock naval battles (naumachiae), although the latter were likely staged during its early years before modifications to the arena floor made them impractical. The amphitheatre was a tool of imperial propaganda, showcasing Rome’s military might, wealth, and social order. It also served as a form of mass entertainment that distracted the populace from political issues—what Roman writers described as “bread and circuses.” Beneath the arena floor was a complex underground structure known as the hypogeum, consisting of tunnels, cages, and lifts that allowed animals and performers to appear dramatically on the stage. This infrastructure demonstrated the Romans’ advanced engineering and theatrical sensibilities. The Colosseum remained in active use for about 400 years. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, its use declined. It was repurposed for a variety of functions over the centuries: it served as housing, workshops, a fortress, and a Christian shrine. Much of its stone was later quarried for other building projects, including St. Peter’s Basilica and numerous palaces in Rome. Interest in the Colosseum as a historical monument was renewed during the Renaissance and later during the 18th and 19th centuries, when it became a symbol of classical heritage and antiquity. Restoration efforts began in the 1800s and have continued periodically ever since, with a focus on stabilizing the structure and preserving it for future generations. Today, the Colosseum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. It stands not only as a reminder of ancient Rome’s architectural and engineering prowess but also as a testament to its complex social and political history. Despite its bloody past, the Colosseum is now celebrated as a monument to cultural endurance, attracting millions of visitors who come to witness one of antiquity’s greatest achievements.

Something a little different from Amputee Outdoors. :) The History of the Colosseum in Rome, Italy – A 500-Word Synopsis The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is one of the most iconic landmarks of ancient Rome and a symbol of the Roman Empire’s architectural and engineering prowess. Located in the heart of Rome, this massive stone amphitheater was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty around 70-72 AD and completed in 80 AD under his son and successor, Titus. Later modifications were made under Emperor Domitian, Vespasian’s younger son. These three emperors gave the Colosseum its name: the Flavian Amphitheatre. Built on the site of what was once Emperor Nero’s private lake, the Colosseum was part of a broader initiative to erase the memory of Nero's excesses and to return public space to the Roman people. The amphitheater was constructed using concrete and sand, and it could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators. Its design included a complex system of vaults and corridors, allowing for efficient crowd control and access, which was a major innovation in public architecture. The Colosseum was used for a variety of public spectacles, most famously gladiatorial contests. Other events included animal hunts (venationes), executions, mock naval battles (naumachiae), and theatrical re-enactments of famous battles. These events were often sponsored by emperors and wealthy citizens as a means of gaining popularity and demonstrating Roman might and generosity. Admission to these games was usually free, and the events were a central part of Roman social and political life. Over time, as the Roman Empire declined and Christianity gained dominance, the gladiatorial games and violent spectacles became less popular. By the 6th century AD, the Colosseum had ceased to be used for entertainment. It suffered damage from earthquakes and stone robbers over the centuries. Large portions of the building were dismantled, with materials repurposed for other construction projects throughout medieval and Renaissance Rome. Despite its partial ruin, the Colosseum remained a powerful symbol of imperial Rome. In the medieval period, it was used variously as a fortress, a Christian shrine, and a quarry. By the 18th and 19th centuries, interest in ancient Rome sparked efforts to preserve the site. Popes began taking steps to protect and conserve the structure, recognizing its historical and cultural significance. In modern times, the Colosseum has undergone several major restorations. Today, it stands as one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also a symbol of the fight against capital punishment, with the Italian government using it to highlight anti-death penalty causes. The Colosseum remains an enduring emblem of ancient Rome’s grandeur and complexity—a monument to both the greatness and the brutality of Roman civilization. Its architectural brilliance, historical depth, and cultural impact continue to fascinate millions of visitors and scholars around the world.

Backpacking, cycling and hiking videos.

I will go hiking all year long.  In the heat of summer, the damp coolness of the spring and autumn and even in the snows of winter.  In my hiking videos I will give you a tour of the trails, a little history about them sometimes, and hopefully with my hiking videos, inspire you to explore nature too.  My backpacking videos focus more on how to successfully camp out in the woods and how relaxing it can be.  Cycling videos are for those that would like to see a little more speed in the video rather than the steady progression of the hiking videos. :)
